What are we building?
We're building a super cool recommendation system similar to the one that Netflix uses to recommend movies to you. Instead of movies, we recommend people.
One use of this, of course, is online dating. That's okay because the existing online dating sites aren't so great. All the profiles sound the same. Woman get spammed. And despite all the quizzes, tests, and boxes we check, we still go on crappy dates.
Sometimes we just want new friends. What if Twnty could show you who else in town has really similar interests as you? Someone that likes the same bands, reads the same books, dislikes the same politicians as you. They'd probably be great to hang out with, right?
Having similar interests is great, but something else is needed.
Similar interests does not guarantee offline chemistry, even with platonic friends. As computer scientists, we've struggled with predicting chemistry. What we've learned in our user testing is that seeing a short video of someone goes farther towards predicting offline chemistry than anything else. Twenty seconds of video on someone is all it takes to know whether you'll like them. The trick is to make video super simple and fun (but totally optionally). We understand not everyone wants to create short videos. That's okay. But it's the future and we're experimenting with it today. Join us.
